In August the Conservative Group on Scarborough Borough Council led calls for Beth Mead to be given the Freedom of the Borough of Scarborough. The highest civic honour the council can bestow. While this may not be up there with an MBE or the string of well-deserved awards and honours she has received since then. It is still our firm belief that this Council should do what it can to say thank you to a woman who has achieved so much and inspired so many.
At following meetings, the Council’s governance group who decides such honours was told that the bar had not been met for consideration. We urge the Council to reconsider and raised that matter at the full Council meeting yesterday.
Adding to her comments made in the Council chamber yesterday, Cllr Heather Phillips said the following: “If His Majesty the King can award her an MBE, then I don’t see how Scarborough Borough Council thinks it is above that. We have weeks left before this Council is merged with North Yorkshire and the Council leadership needs to show some initiative and make this happen.”
