Statement from the Scarborough Borough Council Conservative Group on the progression of the Towns Fund projects:
Last year the government announced that the Borough of Scarborough had been awarded £37m to fund projects aimed at driving long term economic growth and boosting local productivity. The Towns Fund was created by the Conservative government as part of its levelling up mission. The money awarded by central government will be split between the Whitby Town Deal and the Scarborough Town Deal, being awarded £20m and £17m respectively.
The cabinet of Scarborough Borough Council, who are responsible for administering the projects will be hoping to submit the business cases for ten major projects next week. The submissions will then be assessed by The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, after their approval the projects, the government funds will be released, then successful projects will go through the statutory planning processes before final approval.
Conservative Group Leader Cllr. Derek Bastiman added, “It is good to see the Government getting on with our levelling up mission after the pandemic. Hopefully, Scarborough Borough Council has made a good business case for these projects, and they will be successful in meeting the criteria for Government funding”.
